You've probably heard that many of our favorite fish are now threatened by overfishing. In order to continue to enjoy the ocean’s bounty while protecting the oceans, consumers can choose eco-friendly fish for dinner. For more information, check out Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch. They provide up to date information and a smartphone app to keep track of what seafood to buy. In the meantime, here are some eco-friendly fish options:

	Farmed Sturgeon
Sturgeon is a hearty, meaty fish that takes marinades very well, just be careful not to overcook it. Sturgeon is delicious baked in a tomato based sauce, or cooked on the grill with fresh lemon and capers.

	Wild-caught Pacific Sardines
Fresh sardines can be hard to come by because they don’t transport or freeze well, but these tiny fish are well worth it when you can find them. Butterfly, debone and grill your sardines or marinate them and serve them ceviche style in olive oil, lemon juice and salt.

	Farmed Oysters
Oyster farms are some of the most sustainable seafood farming operations, and have a minimal negative impact on the surrounding ocean. Believe it or not, a properly managed oyster farm can positively impact its environment! Enjoy oysters raw or smoked, or lightly breaded and fried.

So, this is the year you're going to get in shape. Good for you! Maybe you’re just beginning a work out regimen, or perhaps you’re already active but want to try something new. Below are some popular exercise options to try:

	Exergames
Motion-sensor gaming innovations like the Nintendo Wii, and Xbox Kinect have unleashed a wave of game-based exercise programs. Whether you like golf, bowling, tennis, dance, yoga, or more traditional aerobics there is a game out there for you!

Pros: The games are relatively inexpensive compared to gym membership, can be used at home, and automatically track your progress so you can easily monitor your improvements.

Cons: The workouts are generally mild to moderate (good for beginners but you may soon outgrow them) and sometimes repetitive. Also, there is less accountability because you're not paying for a membership or working out with others.

	Joining a gym
Gyms offer a great range of exercise machines and classes – everything from kickboxing to Zumba to yoga.

Pros: Since you’re paying for it, you’re generally more motivated to use it. Most gyms offer a good variety of programs for different fitness levels, personal training, and there are also gyms that are targeted to serious athletes, beginners, and women so you can find one that suits you best.

Cons: Membership can be costly and it can be hard to make the time in your day to go there – especially if it's a bit of a drive. Also, some beginners may feel intimidated or self-conscious working out in front of other people.

	Heading outside -
Many people prefer to get their exercise in the great outdoors. Fresh air, natural beauty, and freedom can be great motivators. Also, you can invite friends or co-workers to join you!

Pros: You can make your own exercise routine and work outdoor activity into your daily schedule. Exercising outside with friends can be appealing and provide motivation.

Cons: If you’re going solo, it can be tough to stay motivated and structured, and you are at the mercy of the weather.

With all the kitchen gadgets available, selecting the right options for your kitchen can be overwhelming. But, really, there are only a few truly essential items that all cooks need. Here are a few of the "must haves":

	1. A top-quality knife is necessary for just about every meal you'll ever make. Though there's a wide range of knives on the market, a high-quality chef's knife will work for almost all tasks. Test grips and weight before you buy.

	2. A good-sized pan is essential. When it comes to pans, they should be solid enough to resist warping with heat but still thin enough to transfer heat efficiently. Opinion varies as to whether non-stick or standard is better, so go with what suits your style and cooking preferences.

	3. A solid spatula is truly a multi-purpose tool. You can use it to flip pancakes, mix stir-fries, or maneuver any food item that’s too hot to touch.

	4. A colander is another must-have utensil and can be used for anything from draining pasta to rinsing vegetables. Traditional metal strainers and high-density plastics both work well and both come with a variety of hole patterns and styles.

	5. A set of measuring cups is necessary for any baker. For many dinner recipes you can wing it a little when it comes to measuring, but precision is key for baked goods. Measuring cups will ensure that your baked items turn out perfectly every time.

If you're wondering what to watch tonight at home at Fort Leonard Wood Family Housing, look no further. These current TV dramas are gripping, entertaining, and will surely get you hooked!

	The Good Wife
Headed by a phenomenal Julianna Margulies, the story follows a woman who returns to work as a litigator after her husband's sex and corruption scandal. With tight storylines and an incredible ensemble of actors, this sublime drama is an impressive twist on the legal procedural.

	Breaking Bad
This drama continues to shock and amaze, even after four seasons of nail-biting suspense on AMC. Walter White's transformation from milquetoast chemistry teacher to drug boss is full of incredible characters, smart writing, and a steady stream of shocking moral choices.

	Game of Thrones
An HBO medieval fantasy series, Game of Thrones takes George R.R. Martin's popular series of novels and turns it into a sweeping epic. With multiple storylines full of intrigue and dynastic struggles, this lush story is a real treat for fans of complex, adult drama.

	Downton Abbey
This British import has dazzled viewers and critics alike. Set in a fictional noble country house, the series follows the lives of an aristocratic family and their servants in the kingdom of George V.

	Homeland
Claire Danes stars as an FBI agent following an American Marine who she believes to be a terrorist following his time as an Al-Qaeda prisoner of war. Exhilarating and topical, this new Showtime series is definitely one to keep an eye on.

If you're finding that you can't find what you need in your closet because it's overflowing, perhaps it's time to sort through and organize your wardrobe. Though the task can be overwhelming, a clean closet will streamline your morning routine. When you're ready to clean out your closet, follow these simple rules:

If you haven't worn it in the last year, get rid of it
Of course, this tactic does not apply to something like your wedding dress, but there are very few exceptions. The same goes for accessories like purses, shoes, and jewelry. If you don't use it anymore, donate it.

If it's in poor shape, toss it
Remember, it’s better to have a few high-quality items that can be used in a variety of outfits rather than a lot of one-use garments. Less is more when it comes to fashion.

If it doesn't fit, let it go
If you need an "inspiration" piece – like skinny jeans you have been dieting to get back into – that's fine, but set aside the rest to donate.

	Bonus!
If you choose, you can take all of your unwanted clothes and accessories to a consignment store and trade them in for cash or credit. You can use the credit to begin a new look!

Next time you're grocery shopping, get a little adventurous in the produce aisle and purchase these under-rated but truly delicious vegetables.

	Parsnips
Lighter and sweeter than a potato, this simple root vegetable is fabulous either roasted, or mashed with butter and cream. Parsnips are also great grated raw and tossed with a citrus dressing for a light salad.

	Kale
This healthy veggie is packed with iron, but is often underserved when it comes to taste. Perk up boring steamed kale with a dressing made of garlic, lemon, soy sauce, and sesame seeds. Or try baked kale chips – rinse and dry the leaves thoroughly, spritz with a little olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and bake in a single layer at 350 for 5-10 minutes or until the edges are starting to brown. This crunchy snack tastes great with any seasonings you desire like parmesan cheese.

	Radishes
Radishes not only provide a nice tang to salads and make for pretty garnishes, but they are also delicious and beautiful sliced in half and sautéed in butter or olive oil or roasted.

	Zucchini
In the late summer months, gardeners often have many large zucchinis to get rid of, and the price at the market drops to almost nothing. This is a great time to take advantage of this squash’s versatility, making breads and muffins or slow-caramelizing zucchini in oil with a few mustard seeds for a surprisingly decadent side.

If you wish you could express yourself more effectively on the page, don’t fret. There are a few very simple tips to make yourself a clearer, more vibrant writer. Aspiring writers at Fort Leonard Wood Family Housing, take note!

The easiest thing you can do to improve your writing is simply to write more often, even if you don’t show it to anyone. The process of writing will help you get more in tune with your thoughts, and as you write, you’ll be able to clearly define phrases and styles that work and those that do not.

Along with that suggestion, reading more often is also key. Reading a wide variety of both fiction and nonfiction will both improve your vocabulary and help you learn how professional writers structure sentences and paragraphs.

One great exercise to complete if you're looking to boost your writing skills is to take a passage of existing writing and rewrite it in your own voice. Study the piece, pick out the essential information, and then try to present it to a new reader in your own voice. This can help you understand why writers make the choices they do.

Although English grammar can be a very difficult subject to master, understanding a few simple rules can make your writing clearer and more pleasurable to read. There are a number of excellent grammar resources online, including The Guide to Grammar & Writing at http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/.

Superfruits are antioxidant and vitamin rich options that have profound health benefits. If you're looking for a way to incorporate more nutrients into your diet and are tired of your tried-and-true apple, here are five options for great fruits to have in your kitchen at Fort Leonard Wood Family Housing:

	1. Acai. This Brazilian was first introduced to the American market in 2004 and grows on palm trees. The fruit contains exceptional polyphenol and antioxidant properties, and has also been shown to reduce cholesterol in tests. It is served as pulp or in juice blends.

	2. Goji. Also known as the Chinese wolfberry, these Asian fruits overflow with a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, as well as helpful phytochemicals that may have beneficial health effects. They're most commonly eaten dry.

	3. Blueberries. This fruit has some of the highest antioxidant levels of any on this list, and it also produces tannins that have been shown to inhibit the development of cancer.

	4. Pomegranate. The juicy seeds of this fruit have been shown to inhibit risk factors that contribute to coronary artery disease in clinical tests. Many companies sell pomegranate juice, either pure or blended with other fruits for flavor. Though this fruit is a bit difficult to crack into, it's well worth it!

	5. Sea Buckthorn. This small, orange berry is very acidic and difficult to eat raw. However, when the juice is extracted, it boasts a spectacular dose of vitamin C and phytonutrients that have anti-inflammatory properties.

Incorporate some or all of these delicious natural fruits into your diet to improve your health and your diet.
